Doll F.A.Q.

What are Dollfies?
Dollfie is technically a term that should only be used to describe dolls produced by Volks (the company that brought out the first BJD in the late 90's). Dollfie though, has become a blanket term to describe all Asian Ball Jointed Dolls and generally used in most circles to describe the dolls.

ABJD's are generally made from resin (though there are some vinyl dolls out there), Articulated using ball-and-socket type joints ' and strung with a strong elastic and are highly customisable.

Do you make your dolls?
I wish. One day maybe but no, while I do customise them all of my dolls where made by people far more skilled than I. See below.

Where are they from?
My Yder, IF, Soony etc are all from: [link]
My MNF's are from: [link]
My Dollshe is from: [link]
Karon is from: [link]

There are quite litterally dozens of different companies around these days making BJD's and hundreds of dolls to choose from ranging price wise from $200 to $2,000. Many of those who have been in the hobby for a while stress the need to buy the doll who 'calls to you', I have to agree, there's no point buying a doll that you don't love just because it's on the cheaper end of the scale, save up and buy the one you really love.

Why spend so much on a doll?
There are many reasons I could reel off but personally.... because I want too.

BJD's are Korean/Chinese/Japanese made, hand crafted, hand painted and painstakingly produced by small companies to for the most part a very high standard.

It's also worth noting that at the moment BJD will rarely loose it's market value unless excessively damaged. An especially well modded or rare doll can even be sold on the secondary market for a lot more than it was originally bought for.

How much have you spent on these dolls?
Honestly thats no ones business but my own. Use the links and do the maths if you're that curious.

Where did you get Sparrow's dread wig?
A friend made it for me. If you're on DoA look up Anntagonist, she takes commissions and makes fabulous wigs :3

How did you do Adrian's scars?
Addy's scars are carved into the resin then painted to look more realistic. Again if you're on DoA give Kafers a prod.

Oh wow your doll looks like so and so!
If you’re looking to piss me off this really is the way to go.
Not to sound overly harsh but I’m honestly not particularly interested in hearing that you think one of my dolls looks like your favorite anime character or your ex-boyfriends’ best friends’ cousin.
So please, just... don’t.

Wow that was a crappy and brief FAQ...where can I find some real info?
Den of Angels [link] is by far and away the largest english speaking BJD community on the internet. Just about any and all information reguarding BJD's is on there somewhere if you look for it XD

Also... A list of BJD companies and links may come in handy

Any other usefull links?
For the Brits, some UK BJD forums I belong too (I go by River on all doll forums):

Angels of Life :: [link]

I would much prefer being hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not. I will never be the girl you wanted me to be.
thank you for all the information :aww:

This is one of the best and useful FAQs I've read regarding BJDs. I'm currently trying to save up for one but my brother (who's credit I'll have to use to order it since I don't have one yet) won't let me use his. He's saying they're a worthless things to spend so much money on. I can't put why I want a doll so much in terms he'll understand, see why I want one.

I even told him about how the value of the doll doesn't go down like you said or the value could even raise (I'm guessing because you can customize them and make them one of a kind).

Your photos of your dolls are some of the best and creative photos I've seen to date. lol xD

How do you decide which one to buy, if you have more than one doll that 'calls to you'? I certainly can't save up for two dolls, what with college approaching and whatnot. I have two dolls that I really want, but I can't decide which one to get first.

(Sorry for the long comment xD)

where your bothers concerned I think it's very much a case of you either 'get it' or you don't.
I don't really see why he should have a problem with it though if you're saving your own money, it is after all yours to do what you want with and if getting a doll is something you'd find rewarding and really enjoy then all the better.

Regarding the them not losing their value thing, it's pretty much true at the moment, though the bottom's bound to fall out of the market eventually. You can pretty much sell any doll for more or less what you paid for it originally right now, assuming it's in good condition, you may loose a little but it wont be a huge amount.
As for them going up in value, that only really applies to extremely well done customizations and very limited dolls. Take Dollshe Bermanns for example, there are less than 100 of them around at the the moment, they sell for around $2000 each new in very limited numbers per batch and I've heard of them going for anywhere up to $5k in the second hand market because they're in such high demand but such limited supply.
Buying a doll simply to turn around and sell it at a profit is very much looked down upon by those in the hobby though and considered less than honest. It does make a good argument when trying to justify your first purchase though.

As for choosing them, I'm not quite sure how I settle on one doll over another to be honest. I do have very specific tastes so I of course know if I like a sculpt or not but I do have a wishlist of dolls I'd like own. I guess it just depends on circumstances, I've ended up buying at least six of my dolls purely because the chance came up, baring in mind though that they where either limited or hard to come by so it was pure chance that I had the opportunity to buy them, it was very much 'now or never'.

Sorry if I was rambling, I hope that helps ^^;

I told him I'm saving every penny I earn for that doll. I told him I'd give him the cash upfront and all he had to do was order it. I'm paying fo the taxes and shipping and handling, everything that goes with it, including accesories if I can't make the clothes and stuff. I'm still trying to convince him. My friend said she'll get her mom to order it and I'll just pay her mom. She's already doing it for another one of my friends.

I figured that the really well done customizations would sell for a lot more. I knew there were limited dolls around, I've seen them on the website I go to, I just never knew they could go up for such a high price.

I'd never sell my doll. lol! After all I'd have done to get it? No way. xD Unless like...my family is going bankrupt and we're starving and need food and whatnot.

I'm sure decisions are hard at times when picking your dolls. xD I had 4 picked out of a whole website that I really wanted and it was narrowed down to two. At first, two of them were sold out and I lost feeling towards the 4th one and bumped it off the list. And the one that was left was one I didn't want as much as the two that were sold out and I know I would've bought that one first instead of waiting for the other two to come back into market. They're back now, and now I can't decide. Maybe I'll do what you did, and buy them because I have the opportunity.

Nah. It wasn't rambling. lol. It helped me a lot. :)
